No throw up so far today! Wow it's amazing. Let's keep are fingers crossed that he keeps everything down for the remainder of the day. It would be amazing to have an entire day where Memphis can keep everything down.

The surgeons have been mulling over the idea of getting the fundoplication and a g tube. The fundoplication is a surgical procedure to treat gastro reflux where the upper curve of the stomach is wrapped around the esophagus and sewn Into place. After this surgery, Memphis should no longer have reflux. My concern with this is that fist it's a surgery which brings risks of infection, second he will have to be put back on a ventilator becuase of the anesthia to make sure he continues to breath while under -- he will stay on a vent until he is ready again to come off and breath on his own, third he will go back on TPN until he is healed enough to start feeding again. So, this surgery seems like it will set us back for awhile but in the long run if he stops refluxing it will be a huge step forward not to mention less stress when it comes to worrying about him Aspirating.

The g tube is just a feeding tube to the stomach inserted through the abdomen. This is the tube he will come home with. Memphis will keep this tube until he is able to take full feeds by mouth.

We will find out more on this on Monday. The doctors wanted to see how he did over the weekend before making any decisions.

Other than that, today has been good. Memphis has slept much better than yesterday and hasn't thrown up so far....

  1. Hey Michelle and Chris... River's mom here. Just wanted to weigh in. River got a fundo with his g tube back in August. He didn't spit up for almost 2 months after getting it. One of his Dr's d/c'ed his Prevacid and he started spitting up again. We gave it a week for his body to try to adjust, but went back on Prevacid the next week. No difference... spitting up actually got worse. We're now on Prevacid twice a day AND Reglan cause he's been vomiting so much this week he's lost weight (so much as in I caught it in a cup and measured it and he's been averaging spitting up 75mL's and that's 3/4 his feed). We're going Monday for an upper GI to see if the fundo has slipped up or broken down. All that to say if Memphis gets the fundo make sure to stay on top of any retching or spitting up because in our case it's been really hard to get back under control. Hope he is able to get the fundo and it makes life easier for you all. Oh, and also I know Memphis was on the vent longer than R and had different issues, but if it helps when R was brought back up from surgery he was already off the vent and nasal canulla. We were on TPN for maybe 24-36 hours ater surgery then progressed to Pedialyte for about 12 hours, and then to breastmilk. He did great, but they ended up going up on his volume too quickly and he had some bleeding from his g tube and gastritis around the 3rd day. They backed off the volume overnight and then slowly built back up. We do struggle anytime we go up in volume since the fundo shrinks their stomach and they have to work up due to that.
    Still praying for ya'll!

  2. Oh! And I think I remember ya'll mentioning Memphis' direct bili is still up. So is River's and we came home on Actigal. Still taking it. After surgery his direct bili actually went up from being NPO and back on TPN briefly, but it came back down pretty quickly. Just FYI. :)
